Probably the most widely used yet simple persuasion techniques - Making others feel at ease in your presence. Rapport can be built by finding what you share in common with the person you’re trying to influence. This is a tactic commonly used in consumer sales. Finding commonalities makes people feel ‘we are similar to them’, allowing them to naturally open up to us. Once someone lets their guard down, they become much easier to figure out.

Getting to know the person you’re trying to influence will help them develop a degree of trust in you. By showing we trust them, they are more likely to reciprocate this by trusting us. However, be prepared to play various roles with the people you’re interacting with. Sometimes you'll need to act like you’re below them, sometimes their equal and sometimes an authority figure. Quickly acknowledging the other person's personality and character allows us to slip into one of these three roles more effectively.
